BREAKING: Attorneys for “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett say charges alleging he lied to police about attack have been dropped.
All charges have been dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who made an “emergency court appearance” in a Cook County court in Chicago on Tuesday, a representative for Smollett said.
“Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him,” his legal team said in a statement. “Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th.”
Last week, Smollett pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report and orchestrating a hate crime against himself.
Smollett alleged that on Jan. 29, two men wearing ski masks assaulted him, tried to tie a rope around his neck, and poured an unknown chemical on him as he walked home from a Subway sandwich shop around 2 a.m. in Chicago.
